3 Played Away at Fleetwood
Words & photo - John Lymer
We launched in the mouth of the river 1.5 hours before a 2.2m low tide. WNW Force 6 wind of 25 to 30mph made for challenging conditions but the 3 of us enjoyed the outing overall! We always prefer W or E, so we can sail down the centreline of the channel, but this time it was slightly cross onshore with a bit of North in the wind, so runs had to be a bit across the channel. With wind against the outgoing tide it was very lumpy too. Runs were a bit shorter with lots more gybing - and falling - due to the rough stuff! No 2 mile runs out to the Wyre Light today then! I clocked up 13 miles which is a far cry from the 40 miles on my last visit, but reasonable for the conditions. And 28.4 mph max speed won't break any records either. We had the water to ourselves - the kite surfers obviously have other places to go in a W wind, so that's good. And it was a weekday.
With Morecambe Bay and South Lakeland in the background, here's Dave Monks on the home run, just at the point where the channel narrows ....
